Zack Space Creates Rural Broadband Task Force

 The press release:

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Continuing his campaign to develop greater broadband infrastructure for Southeastern Ohio, Congressman Zack Space (D-OH) today announced that he is forming a Connecting Appalachia Broadband Task Force.  The group – made up of public officials, local leaders, and representatives of the telecommunications industry – represents voices from all ends of the spectrum, a combination Space believes is necessary to provide the network Southeastern Ohio needs in order to attract new industries and jobs.

“We absolutely need wider access to broadband in order to attract new industries and jobs,” Space said.  “The unfortunate reality is that much of southeastern Ohio lags behind the rest of the nation in the deployment of this technology.  Our mission must be to ‘Connect Appalachia.’  If we’re able to push economic development for this region, we must do everything we can to facilitate the expansion of broadband access.”

“Connecting Appalachia is not going to be easy.  But, together, we have to be willing to demonstrate the commitment and dedication that we need.  We have to be innovative in creating public-private partnerships, and we have to help our municipalities get the resources they need,” Space continued.

Last month, Congressman Space held two one-day summits in the district to discuss the barriers to access and what can be done to overcome them.  Over one hundred people representing all aspects of the broadband issue attended each event.

The Appalachian Ohio Broadband Task Force consists of the following people:

  • Stan Ahalt, Executive Director of the Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC)
  • Fred Deel, Director of the Governor’s Office of Appalachia
  • Randy Hunt, State Director for Ohio, Rural Development, United States Department of Agriculture
  • Chris Chapman, Ohio Office of Information Technology
  • Ed Armstrong, Jackson County Commissioner
  • Tom Wheaton, Carroll County Commissioner
  • Rick Schriver, Morgan County Commissioner
  • Harry Eadon, Tuscarawas County Port Authority
  • Ken Peters, resident of Carroll County
  • Gary Little, President of Information Technology Alliance of Appalachian Ohio (ITAAO)
  • Cheryl Burchard, Ohio Telecommunication Association (OTA)
  • Jon McGee, Ohio Cable Telecommunications Association (OCTA)

I'm glad to see that Space is continuing to work on this issue but the problem doesn't stop at the edge of his district. Hopefully more people will get onboard with this effort soon.

Life By The River

I know I missed the deadline for Bill Sloat's challenge but I think I had a good reason, I wanted to take some pictures to use in the post.

I know I complain a lot about the troubles of living in a rural area (45 miles from the nearest Starbucks) but it really does have its advantages. After all, if I hated it here so much why wouldn't I just move?

Below are pictures taken today of things within a 15 minute drive from my house.

Crossing The River

I usually cross the Ohio River by a bridge but just a few miles south is one of the four remaining ferries (and the oldest) that cross the Ohio. The Sistersville Ferry has been in operation since 1817 and is the only ferry that connects Ohio with West Virginia.

The ferry charges $3 for a typical vehicle and can carry up to 8 cars or one tractor trailer per trip.

As an unexpected surprise the captain is my dad's Uncle. I thought he'd retired.

The View From The Top

I don't know what it is about us Southern Ohioans but it seems that both Jerid and I enjoy the view from huge piles of dirt. My pile of dirt just happens to be a little bit bigger though. Here's the view from Kiedaisch Point, a park near my house.

And you don't even want to get me started talking about how friendly the people are...

Can You Post Something Positive About Ohio?

A great idea from Bill Sloat at "The Daily Bellwether":

Now: A proposal for the entire Ohiosphere, right, left or down the middle. Can you all post an item within the next 24 hours that brags about our home state? That sells it to the rest of the world, and to Ohioans themselves.

The temptation, of course, will be to make a joke or take a shot. (A Dem line: Why is Ohio a great place? Bob Taft is gone. A GOP line: Why is Ohio a great place? We hold the state Supreme Court and General Assembly.)

Please resist temptation. Sell our state, lift the blues. Bizzyblog's Tom Blumer consistently posts items he calls positivity, and they are always about something good, or happy, or a happy ending. Think positivity everybody. After all, we don't live in Michigan.

I have my own idea for a post already but it probably won't be up until tomorrow afternoon (breaking the 24 hour deadline).

I've Seen A Lot Of Stupid Fundraisers But...

This one takes the cake.

Have you ever wanted your very own Rudy Giuliani baseball card? How about a "Team Rudy" pennant or an autographed Rudy baseball? If you have than today's your lucky day. If you sell your soul to Rudy work to become one of Rudy's top fundraisers they'll give you one of the baseball items listed above.

So what do you think, is this fundraiser a home run or just another fundraising foul?

Space, Wilson Vote To Pull Troops From Iraq By April

In the past both Zack Space and Charlie Wilson have faced some backlash over their votes against pulling troops out of Iraq. Apparently they've gotten the message though because today they both voted for HR.2956, a bill calling for most US troops to be pulled out of Iraq no later than April 1, 2008. The bill passed with a tally of 223-201 but is expected to be vetoed.

In a press release Space had the following to say about his vote:

“Our soldiers have been extraordinary in their courage, valor, and sacrifice, and they have succeeded at every task asked of them.  They are true heroes, men and women who have, unfailingly, answered every demand. I have supported them at every turn, and I continue to by demanding accountability and a change in the administration’s policy.

“No one is more concerned about the destabilization of a region that is already extremely volatile.  And that’s why I’ve given the President and his staff every chance to show me that we should be fighting this war here and now. In spite of my patience, I’ve been disappointed by our President and his absolute lack of leadership. He has promised that the Iraqi troops would step up to govern Iraq, but he has been unable to bring this about.  As a result, the Iraqis continue to lean on our American troops while a religious civil war burns around them.

“That’s why I’m ready to say enough is enough – it is time to redeploy our troops from Iraq so they come home and truly strengthen our security.  I simply cannot defend a policy that is so expensive in terms of dollars and in life and limb. It would be wrong, morally and militarily, to continue a war our President cannot plausibly defend.

“I have always been honest and candid with my constituents, and I realize that many of them may not agree with my decision, but I cannot, in good conscience, ask another Ohio family to endure the pain and agony of the loss of a family member for a cause that is growing more deadly, and less productive, every day.

“Today should mark the beginning of an effort to properly reorder our priorities. We need to redouble our efforts against the real threat of terrorism that is occurring all around the globe. And we need to make sure that for the first time in years, the needs of our communities and families here at home are again being met.”

While Charlie Wilson made the following remarks on the House floor during the 4 hours the bill was debated:

"This is the time to set a new course. Setting a date certain gives Iraqis the incentive to actually work on things; to meet some benchmarks.

"Our military men and women are among our most precious resources. They are performing admirably and with courage in a situation that they never should have been asked to do. They're doing their job. Now we must do ours - we must bring them home.

"On a recent trip to Walter Reed to visit a seriously wounded Marine I saw again the damage this war's done; not just to that young man, but to his family. They've all put jobs and lives on hold to care for him. His courage and conviction are not in question.

"That Marine would go back to Iraq if we asked him to. We must not ask. How much more blood must be shed? How many more families must we shatter? How many more billions must we spend? Enough is enough".

You can find the full vote tally here.

Zack Space Introduces Bill To Expand Rural Broadband

During the "Connect Appalachia" summit one of the biggest complaints from telecommunications representatives was the difficulties that larger companies had getting grants loans that the government offered to companies seeking to bring broadband internet to rural areas. Apparently Zack Space was paying attention because today he's introduced legislation aimed at making these incentives open to more companies while insuring that the money goes to areas that need it the most. The legislation would also require regular progress reports to be released.

Overall I think this is a great bill. It offers a solution to the companies complaints while insuring that they use the money for the reason it was intended. Hopefully I'll be able to find out more on this later.

I can't find the press release online so I've copied and pasted it below. You can read the press release here.

I'd also like to thank Space's staff for adding me to their press release list.

More On Edwards' Poverty Tour

I know I talked about it yesterday but today I actually sat down and mapped out John Edwards' poverty tour. If he follows this 1828.4 mile route he will have made a giant circle around the Ohio Valley.

Come on Edwards people, get with the program. I'm not asking you to visit me here in Monroe County (a county that usually leads a key swing state in unemployment) but a stop in Wheeling, WV or Marietta wouldn't be that big of a concession on your part if your really serious on this issue.

The Schedule with stop numbers:

Day 1 – Monday, July 16: Rewarding Work & Ending Poverty in America

  • New Orleans, LA  (1)
  • "Good Morning America" Town Hall with Senator Edwards
  • Canton, MS (2)
  • Marks, MS (3)
  • Marianna, AR (4)
  • Memphis, TN (5)

Day 2 – Tuesday, July 17: Strengthening Neighborhoods & Cities Rising

  • Cleveland, OH (6)
  • Youngstown, OH (7)
  • Pittsburgh, PA (8)

Day 3 – Wednesday, July 18: Restoring Hope to Rural America

  • Wise, VA (9)
  • Norton, VA (10)
  • Whitesburg, KY (11)
  • Prestonsburg, KY (12)

Two Quick Voinovich Updates

Update: Make it three with this post by Bill Sloat about the Pentagon's propaganda machine.

DC Madam Releases Her Phone Records

That's right, the East coast Heidi Fleiss is naming names. Well not exactly names per se, but she has released the phone numbers that go with those names.

I have reason to believe the disk - containing a full set of the telephone records for the 13 year operational history of “Pamela Martin & Associates” - already has been pirated.  Despite our very best intentions to maintain control of the information, our efforts seemingly have been for naught.   I am concerned about manipulation of the database with false and misleading information.  Even though such falsifications can be refuted in time by comparing an altered copy with the original, my attorney, Mr. Sibley and I fear that in the intervening time period, considerable damage can and will be done to the reputations of individual and entities with no connection to the business.  Additionally, the overall validity of the records’ contents will be diminished when one false accusation after another begins to manifest. Therefore, to thwart any possible distorted version and to ensure the integrity of the information, the records – in their entirety -- are available for downloading.

Deciphering this voluminous amount of data – some of which is well over a decade old  will not be an easy task.  Frankly, this likely is understating matters. It will take a small army of people skilled in computer and phone technology, investigation as well as factual knowledge regarding the significance OR non-significance of identified persons.  No one individual or entity will be able to connect all of the dots.  The overall endeavor easily could take many months, if not years to research and report conscientiously.

Jeane Palfrey

You can download the phone records from this page but there really isn't that much to see and the massive files (Tiff images) have crashed my relatively stable laptop (ever since I added that extra GB of RAM) several times.

Edwards Planning A Road Trip

I can't believe Edwards didn't include an Ohio Valley stop in this series of speaking engagements.

Edwards will start next Sunday, July 15, with a walking tour of the Lower Ninth Ward in New Orleans. The three-day tour will officially begin the next day in New Orleans with a town hall in conjunction with ABC’s “Good Morning America,” where he’ll kick off the day’s theme of “Rewarding Work and Ending Poverty in America.” Then he’ll head to Canton, Miss.; Marks, Miss.; Marianna, Ark.; and Memphis, Tenn., where he’ll give the first of two speeches.

On Tuesday, July 16, he’ll take his theme of “Strengthening Neighborhoods and Cities Rising” to Cleveland; Youngstown, Ohio, where he’ll give the second speech; and Pittsburgh.

The finale will be Wednesday, July, 18, with a theme of “Restoring Hope to Rural America.” He’ll stop in isolated southwest Virginia, then will end in Whitesburg, Ky., and Prestonsburg, Ky. That's the same Prestonsburg that was the final public stop by Robert F. Kennedy in 1968 on HIS iconic poverty tour.

Also from the Edwards camp is this piece about Edwards' recent trip to Cleveland.

Cindy Sheehan Burns The Last Of Her Bridges

I honestly think the woman's gone crazy.

Cindy Sheehan is considering a run for Congress CRAWFORD, Texas (AP) — Six weeks after announcing her departure from the peace movement, Cindy Sheehan said Sunday that she plans to run against House Speaker Nancy Pelosi unless she introduces articles of impeachment against President Bush in the next two weeks.

Sure it's San Francisco but does she actually think she has a chance with a juvenile stunt like this? Its sad that she's decided this is the best way to use the influence that she's gathered.

Left of Ohio Enters The Terrible Two's

I've spent way too much time on this post already but even I admit it would be a shame to let this blogs first anniversary without even mentioning it.

Looking back I have to say that if I knew what I was getting into when I started this blog I probably wouldn't have done it. I don't regret it, I just think I would have gotten cold feet. But then again if people always knew how everything they did was going to turn out we'd all either be living in a boring utopia or be to scared to leave our homes. In this case its seemed to work out though. Basically as long as Matt Naugle doesn't figure out that my second cousins great-great-great grandmother might once have dated someone that may have been (sure I'm making it up but it's still possible) Jack The Ripper I should be fine. Oh and that one time I accidentally got a buzz from one too many Halls cough drops during that high school field trip to Ohio University needs to stay buried too.

Seriously though it's been a fun year and a positive experience. I can't wait to get started on the sophomore slump.
