Where's Matt Naugle When You Need Him?

I about fell out of my chair when I read this.

TUMWATER, Wash. - Talk about a blunder. A bomb technician discovered that a suspicious package that forced more than 300 workers to evacuate a state building contained a bobblehead doll awarded to public officials for perceived errors.

At Least It's Friday

A 2 Hour Execution In Ohio

So this makes 2 in 2 years.

LUCASVILLE, Ohio (AP) -- Death penalty opponents called on the state to halt executions after prison staff struggled to find suitable veins on a condemned man's arm to deliver the lethal chemicals.

The execution team stuck Christopher Newton at least 10 times with needles Thursday to insert the shunts where the chemicals are injected.

He died at 11:53 a.m., nearly two hours after the scheduled start of his execution at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility. The process typically takes about 20 minutes.

They even stopped to allow the man a bathroom break.

As I've said before I used to support the death penalty but now I'm strongly opposed to it. Two wrongs don't make a right.

This Is Disgusting

In an Australian version of the reality show Big Brother one of the contestant's father passed away a week ago. She still hasn't been told.

A decision by the makers of Big Brother to not tell a contestant her father has died has been condemned as inhumane, unethical and psychologically damaging.

Contestant Emma's father Raymond Cornell died last week and his funeral was held on Monday in Adelaide, but the 24-year-old is still unaware of his death.

"Will they break the news to her on air, for ratings?" World Vision chief Tim Costello said. "This is patent ethical irresponsibility . . . she's only got one father and she'll suffer guilt and possibly resentment for the rest of her life."

Zack Space To Hold Broadband Internet Summits

Recognizing that Appalachia is being left behind when it comes to technology Zack Space will be hosting two summits on the topic. The summits, dubbed “Connect Appalachia”, will take place on May 31st at the Jackson County OSU extension office and and June 1st at Salt Fork State Park. Both sessions will be held from 8:30 A.M. until 12:30 P.M. Both events have also been added to the calendar.

Washington, DC -- Congressman Zack Space (D-OH) will hold two one-day broadband summits called “Connect Appalachia” next week in an effort to explore bringing high-speed internet access to rural areas of Appalachia. These summits will bring together local leaders, representatives of the telecommunications industry, elected officials, and concerned citizens to discuss the barriers to progress and what can be done to overcome them. Ohio’s Governor's Office of Appalachia will be a special guest at these events.

As someone still stuck in the dark ages of dial-up (yep, I'm rocking a blazing fast 50.2 kb/s connection right now) I'm honestly considering heading to the June 1st event.

Now if only Charlie Wilson would do stuff like this.

West Virginia One Step Closer To Table Games

The West Virginia Supreme Court has refused to hear a challenge to a recently passed law allowing individual counties to vote on table gaming.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The state Supreme Court of Appeals has decided not to consider a challenge to West Virginia's table games law.

The challenge was filed by the West Virginia Family Foundation on the grounds that West Virginia's Constitution does not allow tracks to have table games.

But the high court voted 3-2 Tuesday not to consider the foundation's case.

As someone who lives near the West Virginia border I have to say that I'm pretty excited about all this and not just because of the prospect of losing all my money. Table games would not only provide immediate jobs in the casinos but would also draw people to the area that will need places to sleep, eat, and shop.

RAB Wants Youth To Not Vote

In response to Jennifer Brunner's plan to include voter registration forms with high school diplomas RAB has a post up with the following clip.

There are plenty of smart, young people who care about issues and vote. However, with applications available at any BMV and post office- and with the ability to request an application through the mail, it is almost too easy to register. And anyone who needs an ad on MTV or Jennifer Brunner to encourage them to register probably doesn't understand the issues and shouldn't vote.

What? People should have to figure out how to register how to vote without help before they can vote? Maybe they should have to pay a tax as well.

In politics I personally tend to divide people up in to 5 different classes as follows (in order of best to worst):

  • Active Democrats
  • Active Republicans
  • Apathetic Democrats
  • Apathetic Republicans
  • People That Don't Vote

In this country everyone has a right to vote and, as my list shows, I can't stand those that choose not to. I also question the motives of someone that can attack the current Secretary of State for her efforts to get people to vote when they used to work for a former S.O.S. who rejected voter registration forms just because they weren't printed on the right weight of paper.

I also have to wonder what their reaction would be if they had sent out the voter registration forms to NRA members. I bet they wouldn't be complaining then.

Tim Ryan Gets Dugg

Even though Mr. Ryan has admitted to cheating on the challenge (he wanted to be coherent when he gave a commencement address) his story about the TSA confiscating his PB&J has made the front page of Digg.

Now This Laptop Isn't Unbearable

The last few weeks my laptop has been crawling along pretty slowly after I upgraded it to Vista Home Premium with only 512 MB of RAM. Today though things are flying thanks to the fine folks at Circuit City in St. Clairesville, OH. They helped me find a 1 GB memory unit compatible with my laptop and even installed it (and moved the 512 MB unit to the lower bay) for a reasonable price.

It really takes a lot for a store to impress me but the two guys that helped me were both knowledgeable and friendly. You can't ask for much more than that.

Oh, and Vista is amazing now that it actually works right I absolutely love it. The search box built into the start menu is a real time saver.

Tim Ryan Spent The Weekend Hungry

I just had to laugh when I read what happened but a the same time I really felt sorry for him. Apparently he's down to just a bag of cornmeal after airport security confiscated his PB&J.

Sure enough the very nice TSA agent explained to me the 3-1-1 regulations for liquids. As a public service I’ve decided to link you to them. He politely put the peanut butter and jelly to the side, closed my bag and gave it back to me. I was too astonished to talk. I took my bag and walked towards the gate thinking about the 4 or maybe 5 meals that she had taken from me. What am I going to do now? It’s not like I can just go to Safeway and grab another jar. I have .33 cents and a bag of cornmeal to last today and tomorrow.

We're 24 minutes into a new week though so hopefully he'll get some food soon.

Senator Reid Is Fighting Fire With Fire

Remember that little recess appointment trick that Bush uses to avoid Senate confirmation hearings? Senator Reid seems to have found a way to keep it from happening.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has a little trick up his sleeve that could spell an end to President Bush's devilish recess appointments of controversial figures like former United Nations Ambassador John Bolton. We hear that over the long August vacation, when those types of summer hires are made, Reid will call the Senate into session just long enough to force the prez to send his nominees who need confirmation to the chamber. The talk is he will hold a quickie "pro forma" session every 10 days, tapping a local senator to run the hall. Senate workers and Republicans are miffed, but Reid is proving that he's the new sheriff in town.

Let's see how the White House reacts to this. I'm sure they probably have a few surprises left.
