Barack Is In The Running

You can read his full announcement speech by following the "read more" link but I've got the announcement itself below.

And that is why, in the shadow of the Old State Capitol, where Lincoln once called on a divided house to stand together, where common hopes and common dreams still, I stand before you today to announce my candidacy for President of the United States.

Wonkette Wants To Know: Is This Steve Chabot?

Watch this video (unless you're about to eat supper) and pay attention to the man in the background.

Now who exactly was that chowing down in the background? Right now the prime suspect is Ohio's own Steve Chabot! Come on 1st district people, is this your Rep?

Own Bob Ney's Fridge

I can't vouch for it but someone is offering up a free fridge on Craigslist that they claim was once owned by Bob Ney.

I have an old fridge (I think 1988... and formerly owned by former congressman and now inmate Bob Ney!) that is 65" high by 28" wide. Top Freezer with ice maker - one of the knobs that holds the ice bin is broken, but can be fixed, and the lights are out. Other than that, it works fine.

The refridgerator is yours for free for help moving my new fridge from Dupont to SW DC, where this one is. Must have a vehicle capable of carrying a fridge (28" wide, 64" tall).

Going by the picture it's not worth it though, even if I did live in the D.C. area.

Ohio Rollcall Votes Online Thanks To Jennifer Garrison

I was just gearing up to do a big post on this (in fact I'd worked on a draft post as recently as last night) but now it's obsolete. Ohio rollcall votes are now posted online!

Just last Friday I wrote to Garrison's office asking about HB 629 (though I didn't know the number at the time) and got the following response yesterday. I've underlined the surprising part.

David,

You can access all legislation on the following website: www.lsc.state.oh.us

The legislation you are referring to is from the previous General Assembly (126th ). It is HB 629. You can read the original text at the above website. Choose the Bill Documents tab, then choose the 126th GA (on the left hand side), then House Bills & Resolutions, then type in HB 629. Sometimes, there would be a bill analysis but since this was not referred to a committee, there is not one. This was not voted on because it was never referred to committee. We are working on offering it again in this new General Assembly.

Thanks,

Danielle Nelson

Legislative Aide to State Representative Jennifer Garrison

Working on offering it again the day before it actually happened without a bill? My they work fast.

The Clocks Ticking On Bob Ney's Freedom

Bob Ney has until 2 P.M. on March 1st to report to Morgantown federal prison to begin serving his 30 month sentence according to a recent court order. The order seems to confirm that Ney was in fact accepted into the Morgantown facility.

Al Gore To Announce Global Warming Concerts Tomorrow?

If it's got a massive worldwide concert about it than it must be a problem. Well I guess that's the word on the street. Anyway's Al Gore is expected to announce a July 7th series of global concerts tomorrow in London with a line-up that will "dwarf" that of Live Aid and Live 8.

A series of concerts "bigger than Live Aid" is being planned for July, in a bid to put the subject of climate change before an audience of a global audience of 2bn.

The event, scheduled for July 7, will feature co-ordinated film, music and television events in seven cities including London, Washington DC, Shanghai, Rio de Janeiro, Cape Town and Kyoto, with major broadcasters and media owners aiming to extend the reach of public awareness of global warming.

It is understood that former US vice-president Al Gore, whose movie An Inconvenient Truth brought climate change to cinema audiences last year, will announce the event tomorrow in London.

Road trip to D.C. anyone? Didn't think so. In other music news I'm starting to hear rumors that Led Zeppelin may join the reunion tour craze. Normally I'd brush this off but similar rumors about Rage Against the Machine (yuck), The Police (made my day), and Genesis (Phil Collins is the man) paid off.

There's also been a "draft Gore" type meeting earlier today by several of Gore's former advisors and supporters from his 2000 run. Sometime soon I'll have to write a post on why I think he'll run.

State of The State Scheduled

Added another event to the political calendar today and it's a big one, the State of the State speech. The announcement was made today on the Governor's website.

Columbus, Ohio – Ohio Governor Ted Strickland today announced that his State of the State address is scheduled for Wednesday, March 14, 2007 at 12:00 noon.

The 127th General Assembly has scheduled a joint session of the Senate and House of Representatives to convene in the House Chambers at that time to receive the Governor’s presentation of his State of the State address.

Additional planning details for news media will be made available in March.

It's also worth mentioning that the next 5 events on the calendar now appear at the bottom of the sidebar.

Edwards Keeps His Bloggers, Earns Some Of My Respect

For someone who represents a religion lead by a former member of the Hitler Youth (granted it was required by law) and fresh off the heels of a massive child molestation scandal this Donohue guy just can't seem to get a grip on the concept of forgive and forget. Thankfully John Edwards decided not to back down to this blowhard with selective outrage disorder.

Edwards issued the following statement earlier today on his campaign website.

The tone and the sentiment of some of Amanda Marcotte's and Melissa McEwan's posts personally offended me. It's not how I talk to people, and it's not how I expect the people who work for me to talk to people. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but that kind of intolerant language will not be permitted from anyone on my campaign, whether it's intended as satire, humor, or anything else. But I also believe in giving everyone a fair shake. I've talked to Amanda and Melissa; they have both assured me that it was never their intention to malign anyone's faith, and I take them at their word. We're beginning a great debate about the future of our country, and we can't let it be hijacked. It will take discipline, focus, and courage to build the America we believe in.

More On The Voinovich situation

As I mentioned yesterday ProgressOhio is starting to take action on Senator Voinovich's vote against the Iraq resolution. Please sign their petition here.

Republicans Are Playing Politics With Politics

I really just don't get it. If you sponsor a bill why wouldn't you vote for it? Only John Warner knows for sure but I think YDS has a pretty good guess.

Anyway's the big surprise of my morning was figuring out who all the Republicans were that signed the letter asking for further debate on the issue. It turns out that Warner and Voinovich were on the list. What gives?

February 7, 2007

The Honorable Harry Reid, Majority Leader

The Honorable Mitch McConnell, Republican Leader

The Honorable Richard Durbin, Assistant Majority Leader

The Honorable Trent Lott, Assistant Republican Leader

United States Senate -- Washington, D.C. 20510

Dear Leader Reid, Leader McConnell, Senator Durbin and Senator Lott:

The war in Iraq is the most pressing issue of our time. It urgently deserves the attention of the full Senate and a full debate on the Senate floor without delay.

We respectfully advise you, our leaders, that we intend to take S. Con. Res 7 and offer it, where possible under the Standing Rules of the Senate, to bills coming before the Senate.

On January 10,2007, the President stated, with respect to his Iraq strategy, "if Members have improvements that can be made, we will make them. If circumstances change we will adjust." In a conscientious, respectful way, we offered our resolution consistent with the President's statement.

We strongly believe the Senate should be allowed to work its will on our resolution as well as the concepts brought forward by other Senators. Monday's procedural vote should not be interpreted as any lessening of our resolve to go forward advocating the concepts of S. Con. Res. 7.

We will explore all of our options under the Senate procedures and practices to ensure a full and open debate on the Senate floor. The current stalemate is unacceptable to us and to the people of this country.

Sincerely,

Olympia Snowe

John Warner

Chuck Hagel

Susan Collins

Norm Coleman

Gordon Smith

George Voinovich

Democrats Acting Like Republicans? Not Hardly!

Matt from Right Angle Blog recently posted this little quip about Zack Space's recent appearance on "The Colbert Report":

Even though it is all a joke, this video makes a clear point: Democrats in much of Ohio don't win by being Democrats: They win be sharing the morals and traditional values which are associated with the Republican Party. Zack is a far-left liberal, but he is smart enough to know how to hide his views in his conservative district.

So how many Democrats did you see accusing their opponent of supporting NAMBLA, being gay, or lacing bananas with marijuana? How about Democrats investing state money in rare coins or taking poker chips and golf trips in exchange for congressional votes? If Democrats are now acting like Republicans what are Republicans supposed to act like? Preschoolers*?

Tell George Voinovich To Make Up His Mind

This is about to be covered by both ProgressOhio and MoveOn.org so I figured I had better hurry and clean this up and post it. It's been lingering around as a draft since the vote.

Sen. George Voinovich, despite saying that he supported a non-binding resolution against a troop surge in Iraq, recently voted against debating the resolution on the Senate floor.

It's time for us to tell this disgrace to our state that actions speak louder than words. we must not allow him to keep sitting pretty in the middle while we send more Americans to die in this pointless war.

Please take 5 minutes out of your day to send George an email or contact him using the information at the bottom of this post and tell him that it's time to make a stand. Remind him that he represents the people of Ohio, not the Republican party and that we, not a political party, control his fate.

Your five minutes could help send a message to the nation and the world that George Bush is to blame for this mistake and that he is the one that continues to make things worse. Do not let this blame fall on the shoulders of the American people.

You can contact Senator Voinovich using the following information or this email form.

Zack Space On "The Colbert Report" Last Night

Don't forget that Rep. Zack Space of the 18th district will be on "The Colbert Report" tonight.

Well never mind. I had heard last week that the interview was supposed to air on Wednesday but apparently it aired last night. You can still catch a replay at 8:30 P.M. tonight or watch a clip here (or just watch below if it works, I can't watch it on my dial-up connection).

Republicans Block Iraq Resolution Debate

Republicans have successfully blocked debate on the non-binding resolution condemning a troop surge in Iraq. The vote count was 47-49, 11 short of the needed amount.

On a local note George Voinovich was among those that voted against the bill, despite his earlier reluctance for the surge.

John Edwards Still Kicking Himself Over Iraq Vote

John Edwards, lacking the ability to vote for an anti-war resolution, is using every outlet he can to speak out against the war in Iraq.

Of the 2008 Democratic presidential contenders who voted to give President Bush authority to wage war in Iraq, only one will have no chance to make a very public U-turn when resolutions opposing the president's new war plan come before Congress in the coming days.

That one is John Edwards, the former North Carolina senator who showed again yesterday that he will find other venues to parlay his Senate vote into an extended mea culpa.

Edwards began drawing attention to his vote in fall 2005, writing an op-ed piece in The Washington Post that began with: "I was wrong."
