Charlie Wilson Is Released From The Hospital

Earlier today Representative Charlie Wilson was released from the hospital following his emergency surgery to repair a perforated colon.

I have to say that Wilson has earned a whole new degree of respect from me today when his office announced that he would be staying in D.C. so he could vote to override the Presidents SCHIP veto. After the vote is cast he'll be heading back home to rest and recover for a few weeks.

“I have always supported the Children’s Health Insurance Program, but there’s nothing like a week’s stay in the hospital to highlight just how crucial good healthcare is. Everyone deserves quality healthcare in this country.”

-- Rep. Charlie Wilson

I have to respect that kind of conviction and dedication from anyone, no matter what the issue was.

As for his recovery, Wilson said:

“I want to thank everyone who has sent along their good wishes and offered up prayers for my recovery. It really means a lot.”

I'm glad he's out and recovering. I'm (pleasantly) surprised at how quick he was in and out. I'm also glad he stayed in DC to cast his vote. It says a lot for his dedication to his consituency.

However, I take issue with his comment "Everyone deserves quality healthcare in this country.”

Why not say "Everyone deserves quality transportation in this country.” I could use a new car. I think the government should pay for one for me.

Obviously I don't mean this, but why is healthcare considered a right, something that the government should provide?

Note that he didn't say "all poor children deserve good health care" or "all children ..."

He also didn't say that he thought everyone deserved government provided healthcare either. I think the remark could just as easily be interpreted to mean that healthcare should be provided to those that can't afford it. In any case he did just get out of the hospital, I'm sure he wasn't at his best when he said it.

I really do think that everyone should be entitled to some form of healthcare though. It doesn't have to be anything fancy, just enough to handle the critical things. Right now the healthcare system is too far out of control.

I agree the health care system is out of control. I know a family that goes to the ER for everything. I was surprised to find that out, I had heard of such a thing, but never believed it.

I know a young couple who have never gotten insurance. Their first child was born through Medicaid, the second was stillborn through medicaid. The first child is almost 2, still no insurance and no hopes of that changing. And they basically aren't paying for anything.

My back surgery a year and a half ago cost almost $20k and that was just one night in the hospital. I had the foresight to get insurance.

Yes, the healtcare system is broke, the question is how do we fix it. I've been avoiding reading any plans becaused I don't think it's the governement's job. But there has to be a way....
