First They Came...

An adapted version of the original Martin Niemöller poem done by Steve Rohde for the film "Unconstitutional: The War on our Civil Liberties"

First they came for the Muslims

and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Muslim.

Then they came for the immigrants detaining them indefinitely solely upon the certification of the Attorney General

and I didn't speak up because I wasn't an immigrant.

Then they came to eavesdrop on suspects consulting with their attorneys

and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a suspect.

Then they came to prosecute non-citizens before secret military commissions,

and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a non-citizen.

Then they came to enter homes and offices for unannounced "sneak and peek" searches

and I didn't speak up because I had nothing to hide.

Then they came to reinstate Cointelpro and resume the infiltration and surveillance of domestic religious and political groups

and I didn't speak up because I no longer participated in any groups.

Then they came to arrest American citizens and hold them indefinitely without any charges and without access to lawyers,

and I didn't speak up because I would never be arrested.

Then they came to institute TIPS, the " Terrorism Information and Prevention System," recruiting citizens to spy on other citizens,

and I didn't speak up because I was afraid.

Then they came to institute Total Information Awareness, collecting private data on every man, woman and child in America,

and I didn't speak up because I couldn't do anything about it.

Then they came for immigrants and students from selective countries luring them under the requirement of "special registration" as a ruse to seize them and detain them,

and I didn't speak up because I was not required to register.

Then they came for anyone who objected to government policy because it only aided the terrorists and gave ammunition to America's enemies

and I didn't speak up . . . because I didn't speak up.

Then they came for me

and by that time no one was left to speak up.

FBI: putting a backdoor in every router soon?

The FBI wants all future routing equipment manufactured to include backdoors for law enforcement. Like in CALEA, such back doors require no warrant to activate, and hence can be secretly enabled at will. How bad is this?

The Week in Review 7/11/06

I know, I know - it's a Tuesday. Tuesday's aren't really good days for a week in review segment but since this site hasn't been around for a week I ask you to bear with me. I haven't really decided on a format for this yet so I'm just going to do a list.

  • Digg Stories: I've been posting alot of stories from Digg to get some quick content on here. They are a quick, informative source and I will probably continue to add them for some time. Original content is coming soon. I have a few ideas already but there's alot of research to be done first.

  • Ads: The ad's were originally placed here in the hopes of someday being able to afford paid hosting without having to pay too much out of pocket. While that is still a goal it isn't likely to be the primary use of any income generated. The ideas mentioned above may require filing for information under the Freedom of Information Act. After the first 100 pages obtained through a F.O.I.A. filing a 10¢ per page copying fee is assesed. I don't know how much I'd actually be charged but whatever the case revenue generated from this site will most likely go back into this site.

That's it for now. Remember it's going to take a while for me to get this going so please check back.

CIA Claims the Right to Decide What is News

A story I submitted to Digg:
The FOIA says that "representatives of the news media" can be charged only copying fees since they help to carry out the mission of the law by disseminating government information; but the CIA last year began claiming authority to assess additional fees if the Agency decides any journalist's request is not newsworthy enough.
