Soldier charged for refusing to go to Iraq

A story I submitted to Digg the other day...

Army Lieutenant Ehren Watada, stationed at Ft. Lewis Washington but born and raised on O'ahu, has been charged with three offenses for refusing to travel to Iraq to fight.

He faces up to 4 years in prison and a dishonorable discharge. Also he has said he feels the war in Iraq is both immoral and illegal.

Gallup: Almost Two-Thirds of Americans Want Iraq Withdrawal (from Digg)

A new Gallup poll finds that roughly 2 in 3 Americans urge a U.S. withdrawal from Iraq, with 31% wanting this to start immediately. But it also found that while 64% feel they "understand" the Bush administration's argument for staying in Iraq, only 54% understand the Democrats' view--whatever that is.

Ann Coulter's "Flatulent Raccoon Theory"

Conservative Ann Coulter tries to disprove Evolution in her new book "Godless: The Church of Liberalism". Mediamatters.org proves she's an idiot.

The evidence reveals that Coulter's two chapters on the theory of evolution display her own ignorance toward the subject while providing an avenue to make ad hominem attacks against scientists, progressives, and Democrats.

Kerry's letter calling for the reopening of the Bin-Laden unit

The following letter was written by John Kerry to John Negroponte, Director of National Intelligence, calling for the reportedly closed CIA Bin-Laden unit be re-opened.

July 6, 2006
The Honorable John D. Negroponte

Director of National Intelligence

Office of the Director of National Intelligence
Washington, DC 2051

Dear Mr. Director:

I write to express my concern over recent reports that the CIA has closed down the unit responsible for hunting down Osama bin Laden. This unit should be reconstituted immediately and given all resources necessary to finish the job of holding bin Laden accountable and preventing him from organizing or inspiring future attacks against the United States and our allies.

There is no question that since 9/11, al Qaeda has morphed into a global terrorist movement that transcends any one individual. The decision to divert resources from the crucial fight against bin Laden and al Qaeda to wage war on Iraq has made the task of eradicating this increasingly diffuse threat more difficult. We now face a long, difficult and multi-faceted struggle against global terrorism and the hateful ideology that inspires it.

I fully support efforts to adapt our response to the evolving nature of the threat, but this is not a compelling rationale for curtailing efforts to bring this mass murderer to justice. In fact, we cannot lose sight of the fact that eliminating bin Laden would still strike a key blow against al Qaeda and represent a significant step forward in the war on terror. Given what is at stake, our intelligence community should be given sufficient resources to both pursue bin Laden and prosecute the broader war on terror.

Moreover, disbanding the bin Laden unit sends the message to the terrorists that they can kill thousands of Americans without being held to account. Given that Pakistani Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz was quoted this week as saying that "nobody has any idea" where bin Laden is, it is especially important that we send a clear message now that we have not given up the hunt. Reconstituting the bin Laden unit now would make it clear that we will never rest until he has been brought to justice.

Past failures to eliminate bin Laden at Tora Bora and in the nearly five years since 9/11 are no excuse for failing to do everything possible to find him now. The CIA's bin Laden unit can play an important part of our effort to win the war on terror, and I urge you to revive and strengthen it as soon as possible.

Sincerely,

John F. Kerry

Colin Powell Calls for Guantanamo's Closure

Guantanamo ought to be closed immediately--Colin Powell

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell has expressed an opinion that holding inmates at the now infamous Guantanomo Prison is seen as a blight on our country by the international community and said "We have [other] ways of dealing with this population". He maintained that the prisoners shouldn't be released.

It's a step in the right direction but not a big enough one. The Gitmo prisoners are being held indefinitly without bieng charged. We signed the Geneva Convention but we won't treat others the way we expect our soldiers to be treated. Perhaps the golden rule should be signed into law. I think it would help make the world a better place, don't you?

In related news Powell was briefly hospitilized after feeling lightheaded at the Aspen convention where his statements were made. Powell later returned to the conference saying that he felt fine.

Defense Department Seeking Limits on F.O.I.A.

I told you it wouldn't take long. It seems the the Defense Department is paying St. Mary's University School of Law $1 million to find ways to narrow the scope of the Freedom of Information Act. The ultimite goal of the project is to rewrite the law to prevent "terrorists" from getting sensitive information. In other news I'm personally changing "The War on Terror" to the more fitting "The War on Freedom, Privacy, and Free Thinking".

Getting all political for a second

Welcome

Hello and welcome to "Political Ramblings". I created this blog, as the name suggests, to express my political views. I'm sure it won't take long for a news story to come along that I feel the need to comment on but until then I'll be fixing this blogs template to my liking and collecting links to old ramblings on my personal blog, Pointless Ramblings, to post here.
