Senate Votes Down Ban On Cluster Bombs in Crowded Areas

Yesterday the Senate voted 70-30 on an amendment to the Pentagon budget bill that would ban the use cluster bombs near heavily populated areas. The infamous Ted Stevens (R-AK) was very vocal against the issue saying "The rules of engagement properly belong with the Department of Defense and the commander in chief" and that "the ability of our military to use these munitions to protect our people".

Israel has been criticized recently for its widespread use of cluster bombs in the recent conflict with Lebanon. UN teams in Lebanon to defuse landmines were reassigned to defusing unexploded bomblets after the cease fire.
